About
About Us
Supporting mothers to support their babies.
Nurturing Beginnings Inc is an Australian registered charity supporting mothers, babies and families during the earliest years of life.
Our work begins with a simple idea:
Babies do best when the people caring for them are supported too.
A baby’s development unfolds through relationships.
Through being held, responded to, spoken with, comforted, played with and understood.
Mothers also care for babies within relationships.
Family.
Friends.
Professionals.
Neighbours.
Other mothers.
Community.
Our purpose is to strengthen the support around mothers during this important period.
Why We Exist
The first year after a baby is born can transform almost every part of a mother’s life.
Relationships change.
Daily rhythms change.
Identity can change.
Existing support networks may become harder to access at exactly the time they are needed most.
At the same time, mothers are trying to understand a rapidly developing baby while navigating enormous amounts of information and advice.
Many mothers navigate this period well.
That does not mean they should have to navigate it alone.
Our Purpose
Supporting mothers so babies can thrive.
We work to strengthen the relationships, knowledge and community connections around mothers during their baby’s first year.
Our approach recognises that:
• babies benefit from warm, responsive relationships
• mothers benefit from reliable information and supportive relationships of their own
• social isolation can make motherhood more difficult
• connection is easier to build when opportunities are local and consistent
• early support can help families navigate challenges before they become more difficult
• access to community support should not depend on capacity to pay
Our Work
Mothers’ Group is the principal initiative of Nurturing Beginnings.
Our mission is to make professionally facilitated weekly group support, trusted child-development guidance and meaningful peer connection more accessible throughout the first year of motherhood.
We create the structure around connection:
a consistent place to meet
a skilled facilitator
a small group of familiar mothers and babies
trusted information
regular opportunities to talk
pathways to further support when needed
The aim is for mothers to build support networks that continue beyond the formal program.
Our Approach
Understanding, not prescribing
There is no single perfect way to parent.
Babies differ.
Mothers differ.
Families have different cultures, histories, circumstances and values.
Our role is not to correct mothers or tell them what they must do.
We provide trusted information and opportunities to understand babies’ development, behaviour, communication and cues.
Relationships matter
Information alone is rarely enough.
People also need people.
Our programs intentionally create opportunities for mothers to build reciprocal relationships and become more connected with their local community.
Professional facilitation
Strong groups do not happen automatically.
Skilled facilitation helps create safety, inclusion, respectful discussion and continuity.
Early and accessible support
Families should not need to reach crisis point before meaningful support is available.
Our programs complement — rather than replace — health, mental health and family-support services.
Support without judgement
Mothers can arrive exactly as they are.
Babies can feed, sleep, cry, wriggle and need comfort.
Questions are welcome.
Different experiences are welcome.
No mother is expected to perform motherhood for the group.
Why the first year matters
A child’s earliest experiences help shape foundations for physical, cognitive, social and emotional development.
During infancy, babies are learning about relationships, communication, movement, safety and the world around them at an extraordinary pace.
Supporting the adults and environments around babies is therefore an important part of supporting babies themselves.
Building stronger support around families
We seek to work collaboratively with:
• maternity services
• child and family health services
• hospitals
• GPs and allied health professionals
• perinatal mental health services
• family and community services
• local councils
• early childhood organisations
• community organisations
• universities and researchers
• philanthropic organisations
• government
• local partners
Our aim is not to duplicate existing services.
It is to strengthen the space between professional care, community support and mothers’ own informal networks.
Shaped by Mothers’ Experiences
We collect feedback and outcome data to understand:
• where support is missing
• what prevents mothers from accessing it
• whether mothers feel socially connected
• whether they have people they can turn to
• whether they better understand their baby
• whether they know where to seek additional help
• which aspects of facilitated group support are most valuable.
We use this information to improve our programs and contribute constructively to broader conversations about maternal, infant and family support.
For Impact, not profit
Nurturing Beginnings Inc is an Australian registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient endorsement.
Our work is supported through grants, donations, partnerships and community support.
Funding allows us to provide facilitated groups without charging participating families.
Our Vision
Mothers connected. Babies supported. Families surrounded by community.
We want to help create a future where mothers do not have to rely on luck to find meaningful support after having a baby.
Where local relationships, reliable guidance and pathways to help are readily available.
And where supporting a mother during her baby’s earliest months is understood as part of supporting the child too.
